Braving House Calls is a humorous sequel to the humorous Something’s Leaking Upstairs, (2005) the story that took Claire and George from professional careers in Los Angeles to George’s dream of living on a mini-ranch and caring for calves, pigs and chickens in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Their adventures continue throughout this novel. Although Claire loves the climate and the scenery, she is determined to make George fulfill his promise that their “retirement” will include lots of travel. Their mini-ranch income is largely derived from eight tenants in the run-down rentals they have purchased. These keep George busier than he ever was in an 8 to 5 job. Besides caring for the animals (he loves) he is needed for daily attention to tenants needs. Claire is kept busy with collecting rents, responding to disaster calls from tenants, and wielding the paintbrush and roller. Her jobs also include rent collections, an occasional chase of wayward animals, and learning to midwife a sow as she delivers seven piglets. Finally Claire gets her wish for travel in a surprise revelation from George that he, too, wants to travel—but to places Claire could never imagined possible.

On its face, this novel is a charming little tale about the challenges of everyday life from the point of view of Claire Blake, an American woman who is married to a British-born husband. The Blakes own rental properties and are kept constantly juggling to meet the needs of their tenants while simultaneously working hard to care for their own calves, pigs and chickens. Claire is bright with a sharp wit, and her inner dialogue provides much of the humor in the book.And Claire is also wise, which offers a deeper level of this book, so that in one sense it can be read as a treatise on how to stay happily married. I liked the subtlety of that message and also the strong writing as a whole.
This is a quick, entertaining read that I enjoyed thoroughly.

With her customary sense of wit and timing, Mrs. Gore leads you down the path of rental management where, it seems, the job is never done. The daily crises met by George and Claire will make you chuckle while, at the same time, drawing your sympathy for their plight. Claire's resilence in multi-tasking with chickens, pigs, and rentors is inspiring and George's cool British demeanor and "Jack of all trades" ability is admirable. Through all the tests, their marriage partnership remains strong and makes you fall in love with this resilient couple. "Braving House Calls" is a fun read and I found it difficult to put the book down.
With great humor, Willma Gore brings the reader to a lovely time and place where an American wife tries to make sense of her life with her Brit husband as she helps with errant tenants, errant farm animals and rental property that seems to always need fixing. This is the 1980's version of "The Egg and I"-- with a laugh a minute and nostalgia for simplier times.
If Claire Blake cannot see the humor in another rental catastrophe, British husband George will take the lead. Either way, author Gore captures the twists and turns of dealing with broken down properties, public of all sorts and George's determination to broaden their rental empire in spite of his promise to Claire that they will travel extensively.
That's the crux of the tension right there George the gentleman farmer, versus Claire the travel writer. As another reviewer said, the story also shows you have to have a good marriage--when to laugh it off and when to knuckle down.
Part 1 is SOMETHING'S LEAKING UPSTAIRS, which I read in a single afternoon and nearly fell out of the hammock I was laughing so hard at Claire's answering the door with her husband's shorts on her head (you gotta read it!) You get humor, tenacity, inventiveness and tenderness in BRAVING HOUSE CALLS.
Gore's insight into human nature and economy with words make anything she writes a delicious read.
This is a delightful book! It's so funny you can't stop reading; I finished it in 2 days!It wraps up quickly, with everything turning out right! I'd recommend this as a good read for anyone, old or young. Ms Gore is a skillful writer, bar none!
