I expected old fashioned writing style with this book, but it was more of a history/documentary laced with broken threads of a story.*It begins with long paragraphs of description. There is a paragraph or two of story, then a large paragraph (in parenthesis) explaining the culture and customs of the time. Repeat from asterisk ad nauseum.
And understand that the information about Egypt must be from 100 years ago, give or take a decade or two.
I put it down before I'd read a quarter of it.

I thought this would center on Ancient Egypt, but there is a large amount of the book dedicated to Ancient Greece and Persia, also. I found the story to be fascinating, in that it was written by an Egyptologist. There were also lots of interesting facts I learned about the ancient cultures that are discussed. It was a well-written book with story elements and also many historical elements which were combined in a unique way.
